Rates of abortion in the U.S. are at their lowest for 30 years, a new report has shown.
The document, published by pro-choice organization the Guttmacher Institute, examined incidences of the procedure since 1974, a year after it was legalized by the Supreme Court.
It found that abortion rates dropped from 29.3 abortions per 1,000 women in 1981 to 19.4 in 2005.
Teenage abortions in particular were found to have fallen, although rates among black and Hispanic women remained higher than other groups across the board.
Sharon Camp, president of the Guttmacher Institute, told InjuryBoard.com: “Many Americans will embrace the news that there are less abortions, especially among teens and that the larger percentage of abortions are occurring earlier in pregnancy.”
In related news, the Alliance of Catholic Health Care in California has announced its support for proposed federal regulations that would protect hospitals and health care providers from being forced to provide abortions.
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, regulations are necessary because provisions of federal laws that would otherwise prevent discrimination against hospitals and health care workers are being ignored or overlooked.
